Patricia McCarney, the Global Cities Institute (GCI) Director and World Council on City Data (WCCD) President and CEO, and Senator Art Eggleton, the Global City Indicators Facility (GCIF) and WCCD Advisory Board Chair, presented on the panel entitled Tools and Indicators for Understanding Cities at the Smart City Expo World Congress on November 20th, 2014 in Barcelona, Spain.
This session focused on how people can study and analyze cities to better understand their trends and plan ahead. Many cities are already using tools to measure changes in the environment, economic and social development, energy consumption and sustainability, and creativity and technological development. In this session, several initiatives that are working to better understand city development were discussed.
Patricia and Art presented on the importance of city metrics, ISO 37120, and the work of GCI and WCCD. Richard Sommer, the Dean of the University of Toronto’s John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, was also in attendance.
