Sustainable + Smart Cities

On February 5, 2016, the GCI presented “Smart + Sustainable Cities” the first in a series of GCI “Lunch and Learns”. With presentations from Senior Fellow Nico Tillie and Post-Doctoral Fellow Iain Stewart, the event brought together representatives from the City of Toronto (Planning and Environment Departments), several Ontario Ministries including (Housing and Urban Affairs, Environment and Energy) and academics from across the University of Toronto community. The event was chaired by Dean Richard Sommer from the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design.

Coffee at the GCI: Urban Poverty and Inequality - Confronting the Challenges of Affordable Housing Locally and Globally

As part of its Lunch and Learn series, the GCI hosted afternoon coffee and a discussion on urban poverty, inequality, and the challenges of affordable housing.  Senator Art Eggleton who served as Chair of the Toronto Mayor’s Task Force on Toronto Community Housing presented the Task Force's final report findings and recommendations for Canada’s largest social housing provider.  Professor David Hulchanski, University of Toronto, presented his most recent research on inequality in cities and low cost housing in Canadian cities.  MP Adam Vaughan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister for Intergovernmental Affairs, spoke to the federal governments perspectives on poverty and inequality.
