GCI convenes working group in Zhuhai for new ISO standards

The Global Cities Institute will be in Zhuhai, China, May 14-18 as Patricia McCarney, Director of the Institute, convenes ISO/TC-268 WG 2 - the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) working group on city indicators for sustainable cities and communities.

GCI hosts roundtable on Toronto’s Smart City development

The Global Cities Institute hosted a Smart Cities Challenge roundtable on the development of Toronto’s application in the federal Smart Cities Challenge, based on a vision for Toronto as a smart city and how smart city solutions built in Toronto can travel to other cities and communities across Canada and worldwide.

Global Cities Institute and WCCD launch "City Data for the SDGs"

Professor McCarney leads high-level UN panel

Leveraging the high-calibre data of the GCI developed, ISO 37120 standard, a report was launched at the United Nations in New York on July 17th, underlining the importance of city level data in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In addition to high level participation from global stakeholders and the Canadian government, GCI Director Professor Patricia McCarney chaired a two-hour session on local level data. Also attending the event was Dean Richard Sommer.

"Smart + Sustainable Cities" Lunch and Learn

The GCI presented “Smart + Sustainable Cities” the first in a series of GCI “Lunch and Learns”. With presentations from Senior Fellow Nico Tillie ("The Smart CIty Planner") and Post-Doctorate Fellow Iain Stewart (“The Metabolism of Megacities”), the event brought together representatives from the City of Toronto, Government of Ontario Ministries, and academics from across the U of T community.

A Conversation on Urban Energy, Climate Change and Resilient Cities

The Global Cities Institute hosted “A Conversation on Urban Energy, Climate Change and Resilient Cities” that brought together thought leaders on cities and climate policy to discuss urban energy and its relationship to resilience and sustainable development. Among those in attendance were members of the Global Cities Institute, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Provincial Government, City of Toronto and the University of Toronto.

Global City Indicators - How does Toronto stack up?

City of Toronto Planning Department Seminar

GCI Director Patricia McCarney was invited to speak at the Ontario Investment and Trade Centre to over 50 members of the City of Toronto Planning Department, as well as representatives from the Economic Development Department. Her lecture – “Global City Indicators: How Does Toronto Stack Up”- focused on the importance of city data for effective city planning, as well as introducing the ISO 37120 standard for sustainable cities. Professor McCarney also shared insights as to how the City of Toronto compares to other cities from around the world – according to data from ISO 37120.

Beijing Municipality Delegation Visit

The GCI hosted a delegation of 17 senior public servants from Beijing Municipality on November 3rd, 2015. The School of Public Policy and Governance (SPPG) at the University of Toronto is hosting the delegates who are undergoing a series of learning modules on urban policy and governance. GCI Director, Professor Patricia McCarney and GCI Senior Fellow, Professor Richard Stren welcomed the delegation to the Institute and introduced the delegates to the work of the Institute and its sister organization, the World Council on City Data.

Mayor of Antakya, Turkey visits GCI

Global Cities Institute

Mayor Lütfü Savaş - from Antakya, Turkey visited the Global Cities Institute as part of a visit to the University of Toronto to discuss a proposal for a large UofT research & education facility in his city. Antakya is one of Turkey’s newly formed metropolitan cities. The Global Cities Institute was presented to the Mayor and a discussion was held around how the GCI, as a multi-disciplinary urban research institute, has worked closely with the City of Toronto and other cities globally. During the visit to the GCI, he expressed interest in the Institute’s work around city indicators and the importance that standardized data could play for Antakya. Discussion was held around how data can be used to improve planning in the city and how the open data portal can encourage citizen participation. The Executive Director of Heritage Toronto also joined the meeting to provide some insight and information on the City of Toronto’s heritage preservation policies.

Big City Big Ideas - Universities, Cities and Prosperity: An Agenda for the Future

The Global Cities Institute was a sponsoring partner of Universities, Cities and Prosperity: An Agenda for the Future, as part of the Big City Big Ideas series. The event featured a discussion with University of Toronto President Professor Meric Gertler about the university and the city, and the critical role the University of Toronto will play in the economic, social, and cultural future of the Greater Toronto Area. Professor Gertler, the 16th President of the University of Toronto, is one of the world’s foremost urban theorists and policy practitioners, and a widely regarded expert on innovation, creativity, and culture as drivers of the economic dynamism of city-regions.
